Rotterdam wedding photographer engagement shoot at Hotel New York

Graham and Anna met during a skiing holiday with a group of mutual friends. After getting acquainted on the slopes, Graham plucked up the courage once they were back home in Holland to ask Anne out on a date. Their first date was on the terrace of the Hotel New York Rotterdam, which made the perfect location for our engagement shoot, complete with the stunning Erasmusbrug (Erasmus Bridge) for a backdrop.

Engagement Shoot | Graham and Anna

Graham and Anna met during a skiing holiday with a group of mutual friends. After getting acquainted on the slopes, Graham plucked up the courage once they were back home in Holland to ask Anne out on a date. Their first date was on the terrace of the Hotel New York Rotterdam, which made the perfect location for our engagement shoot, complete with the stunning Erasmusbrug (Erasmus Bridge) for a backdrop.

Our original plan had been to do the shoot on a Wednesday, but I always keep track of the weather before a photo shoot and the weather forecast for that day was terrible. We rescheduled for Sunday and it was lucky we did – the forecast was on the mark and Sunday was a perfect day for shooting, right from the moment we met at 1.30pm at the entrance of the New York Hotel.

Windy shoot

If you are from the Netherlands or have ever visited here, you will probably be familiar with the wind. It's not a coincidence that it was a Dutch man who invented the world's first umbrella that cannot be blown inside out! Not only is the wind annoying – sometimes it can make wearing hats impossible, and I love to wear hats – but it can also pop up at the most inconvenient times, like during that day's photoshoot.

Rotterdam Harbour

Our shoot was on the sea front of Rotterdam Harbour, so the wind was not only strong, but coooold. You get used to expecting the unexpected as a photographer though and, luckily, we had the most beautiful sunshine, giving us warm pockets during which Anna and Graham could quickly whip off their coats.

Getting married in Rotterdam

Then there was the location itself, which was a great area for a shoot with so many different backdrops to work with. Anna and Graham quickly relaxed and got into the flow, laughing and enjoying themselves. During the shoot was walked around the hotel and across the water to a small market. Taking the opportunity to sit out of the wind for a moment, Graham and Anna enjoyed a hot chocolate together while I took the opportunity to take a few great candid shots. It was a wrap by 3pm.

Anna and Graham will be getting married this year in Rotterdam and we wish them all the very best!
